Welcome to our new money section! You may already know Refinery29’s Money Diaries… this is our own version of it! We’ve put together a few questions to understand what women are doing with their money. Let’s break the taboo and talk more about finances!

Copywriter (words for brands) in London. 25 years old. In a relationship.

Financial goals:

Short term (1-5 years): Pay off all my debts (currently around £4,500) and save, save, save.

Medium term (5-10 years): Have enough money to have saved for a deposit for a flat in London, and to comfortably afford to be freelance.

Long term (10 years +): Live happily, comfortably and responsibly within my means, with good investments and freedom to spend time in places I've always dreamed of visiting.

Best buy ever: My car. Despite not using it a lot, it gives me independence and ability to always go home.

Worst buy ever: Literally, anything I've ever bought in Topshop or H&M. I'm currently working very hard to spend on quality, not quantity.

Things you spend the most money on: Clothes, holidays, eating out and paying back debt.

Salary / Income: £43,000

Net worth (what you own vs what you owe, or your assets minus your debts): Erm, I'm worth nothing!

Any side hustles: Yes, freelance writing projects.

Savings: Currently, £280 in stocks and shares via my MoneyBox app. I have a grand old Google Sheet that's helping me plan to have saved £5000 by the end of £2019!

Home: I live with my boyfriend, who owns his own home. I'm saving for a deposit to buy my own.

Debt: SO MUCH. Student debt (obv, but must think of that as an education tax), £1,500 in overdraft, £1600 in credit card naughtiness, plus a few other bits like storecards, too.

Investing: Workplace pension, stocks & shares with MoneyBox, some crypto with Coinbase (but it's early days!).

Pension: Yes, through work. I recently combined some old pension funds into one place, using PensionBee.

Insurances: Travel Insurance. Should I have more?!

What is money for you? Absolute freedom, empowerment and independence. Also, fun tokens.

What is financial independence for you? Being debt & anxiety free so I can live my life on my own terms.
