What does financial independence mean to you? "Freedom"

Hi Louise!

Could you please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am a Mother of two children, the Founder of Beyondtheschoolrun.com and the author of recently published ‘A New Way for Mothers.’

What inspired you to launch Beyond The School Run?

After having my second child I found there were so many challenges in working flexibly and combining work and caring. I felt incredibly passionate about the potential of the talent drifting away at the schoolgates each day because it didn’t fit with the conventional working hours and wanted to be part of creating positive change for myself and for future generations.

What’s your relationship like with money and personal finance?

I would say up until now it’s been ok, but I haven’t connected or engaged with it in a way that I am learning to now. I have often found myself in the past switching off around the subject of money because I think it has often been spoken about in a male way. I am now becoming so inspired by the female way. The combination of the two is what we need.

What does financial independence mean to you?

Freedom.

What are the financial considerations of becoming of being a parent?

The early years of parenting when you are focused full time on caring can remove you from your connection with money and your money journey and then combining work and caring flexibly. This is what I am working on not only for myself but for our community at Beyondtheschoolrun.com - empowering mothers to connect with their money journey at any stage. I have learnt that often there is a new way and with most things, it comes from within, so all too often it is our own value and self worth that is connected to money and earning.

What’s the one thing you indulge in?

Self growth through books and learning.

What is the best financial decision you have ever made?

Working from home. It has kept my costs down so much.

Have you ever experienced a financial epiphany? A sort of wake-up call, where you suddenly think - “I must start doing things differently”?

Over the last year I have been thinking about it a lot and exploring the female connection with money.

What is Vestpod for you?

A movement to empower women to connect with money, earn, share it and create positive change.

Own up. Have you made any major financial faux-pas?

I am quite careful with money. I have spent a lot of time decluttering over the past few years, which I write about in my book, so I am really careful now to make sure I only buy things that I really love. It still happens sometimes I buy something and think that wasn’t right.

Favourite book & podcast?

I recently read Denise Duffield-Thomas’ book ‘Get Rich Lucky B’ and loved it.  I am also inspired by Jess Lively’s podcasts.
