What On Earth Are We Doing With Our Money?

You might already be familiar with Refinery29’s Money Diaries… well, this is the Vestpod version! We’ve put together a few questions to help us understand what women are doing with their money, and they've answered! Always fun, always succinct, and always anonymous.

lawyer. london. 28. in a relationship.

💭 Financial goals:

Short term (1-5 years): Saving for a house deposit.

Medium term (5-10 years): Saving for a comfortable family life.

Long term (10 years +): Comfortable life; good retirement!

🌟 Best buy ever: Bike - it was a big upfront cost but I’m already saving so much on commuting and plan to get into cycle touring as a cheaper way to go on holiday!

😳 Worst buy ever: Some silver Maje boots - a splurge, albeit in the sale - which I’ve worn once.

👀 Things you spend the most money on: Rent - and then probably clothes/homewares, although I’ve been much better since lockdown.

😌 Pension: Yes - through my work, not sure how much I have in it.

🔮 Insurances: Annual travel insurance (£60).

💸 Salary / Income: £90,000

💰 Net worth (what you own vs what you owe, or your assets minus your debts): 0 - the most expensive thing I own is probably my iPhone or bike! Everything is currently in savings.

💻 Any side hustles: No.

👛 Savings: Yes - so far £84k, spread between an ISA and a Marcus account. I’m very lucky to be in a position where I’m earning a very good salary and have relatively minimal outgoings, so I’ve been saving as much as possible (at least 50% of my take-home pay) for the last four years.

🏠 Home: Not yet but planning to buy a flat within the next two years (I want to have saved more than my deposit/moving costs so I don’t go back to 0 in my savings and not have a financial cushion).

🔦 Debt: Proudly £0.

📈 Investing: Not yet - I’m still struggling with a “money under the mattress” mentality, but continuously inspired by Vestpod to get started with it...

What is money for you? Security and freedom.

🚀 What is financial independence for you? Financial security - enabling me to make the best decisions for me without having to prioritise money in those decisions (such as being able to switch careers and not being tied to a high salary).
